HERBS in Relation to the TAROT


The FOOL   -  GINSENG
Ginseng is considered the herb of ‘Cosmic Energy’ and is  a tonic and demulcent. The Ginseng root is used to strengthen all deficiencies and weaknesses.

Symbolically, Ginseng is used for colds, flus and weakened states of being, and for problems with assimilating food.  Ginseng is also used for personal support.

The Divine meaning tells of detached innocence, unfettered energy and the freedom to roam and enjoy.



The MAGICIAN    -  ASTRAGALUS
Astragalus is the herb associated with The Magician. It is a herb of creativity, and is a digestive and a diaretic and is the most powerful of herbal immune tonics.

Symbolically, Astragalus is used to aid poor assimilation of food, drink as well as ideas and notions. It is also useful for weakness, fatigue and sluggishness and aids those who have a tendency to feel the cold.

The Divine meaning is creativity, unlimited possibilities and the ability to undertake whatever one decides.



The HIGH PRIESTESS  -  PEONY

Peony is an anti-spasmodic and emmenagogue. Peony is the herb of ‘intuition’. It is commonly used in gynecology. The root promotes internal circulation, and it relieves spasms. 
Peony is symbolically used for tension, nervousness, stress and for the relief of menstrual cramps.

Peony, emotionally, can be used to promote one to speak up for oneself. Peony relates to intuition, mystery, inner-knowledge, wisdom, beauty, grace and the ‘Yin’ or female principle. 

Yin and Yang is the symbol for Peony.



The EMPRESS  -   DON QUAI

Don Quai is an emmenagogue and a tonic for the blood and hormones. It regulates the menstrual cycle, and helps to relieve cramping, as well as aiding fertility. Don Quai is considered to be the supreme tonic for women, and is often called the ‘female Ginseng’.

Symbolically, Don Quai can be used for emotional and physical coldness, and for a lack of warmth and compassion for others. Don Quai can also be used for poor circulation and a lack of creativity.

Don Quai, in a Divinatory context, is to do with ‘Mother Nature’. It tells of new life and possibilities, abundance and fruitfulness.



The EMPEROR  -  ARACTYLODES

The herb associated with The Emperor is Atractylodes. It is a carminative, diuretic and tonic. The root of Atractylodes is used for increasing the power of digestion and for increasing personal energy. It also reduces abdominal bloating and gas.

Symbolically, Atractylodes is used for difficulty in assimilating ideas and/or situations. It is also used to aid a weak digestion and elimination.

Divinatory wise, Atractylodes gives one the power or organization. It can also be used for protection, and tells of greatness and importance achieved.



The HIEROPHANT   -   SAGE

Sage is a carminative and an aromatic. It can be used in cooking to prevent gas and indigestion. Sage leaves strengthen and heal in the treatment of both chronic and acute diseases. 
Sage leaves are burned as incense during religious ceremonies amongst ancient and today’s Native American Indians. 
Symbolically, Sage is used for contacting the spiritual side of one’s nature. Sage is also used to cleanse and repel negative energies by burning the leaves and wafting the smoke over oneself and in one’s environment.

Sage is also used to stimulate inner-awakening and growth, and its Divinatory meaning is for inner-guidance, spiritual guidance and to teach.



The LOVERS   -   PARSLEY

Parsley is a diuretic and digestive. The roots are considered an aphrodisiac as it is said to counteract impotence, and both the leaves and the roots are used as a digestive and diuretic.

Symbolically, Parsley is used for a lack of love and attraction to others. It is also used to counteract self-centeredness and a tendency to stress and anger. 



The CHARIOT    -   CYPRESS

Cypress is a diuretic and a tonic and regulates the energy of the whole body. It can be used to counteract moodiness and mood swings, symptoms that come and go, and trouble digesting food. Cypress can also be used to regulate the menstrual cycle.

Symbolically, Cypress is used for regulating one’s energy and for stabilizing the emotions.

The Divinatory meaning of Cypress is the knowledge of inner-power and strengths, as well as the ability to regulate one’s life to manifest one’s highest potential. 

Cypress is also for triumph and will.



STRENGTH    -    CAYENNE  (Capsicum)

Cayenne stimulates the circulation of the blood and raises the energy, vitality and enthusiasm. It counteracts the effects of indigestion and stops bleeding.

Cayenne is the herb to take when other herbs seem not to be working properly, as it enhances the effects and encourages them to work at the highest level.

Symbolically, Cayenne is used for coldness, lack of vitality, isolation and blockages on all levels.

The Divinatory meaning is for power, strength and the courage to face all outer challenges.



The HERMIT   -  LICORICE

Licorice is a demulcent, a tonic, an anti-poison and an aperient. Licorice can be used for ulcers, indigestion and food poisoning. 

Licorice is called the ‘Peacemaker’ herb as it has a calming effect on the mind. Licorice can also be used for argumentative or quarrelsome people, and for nervousness and irritability. 
Symbolically, Licorice is for difficulty feeling at peace within.

The Divinitory meaning of Licorice tells of a ‘light bearer’ for others, by enlightenment and teaching by example. It also tells of inner-attainment and humility.



The WHEEL OF FORTUNE    -    SLIPPERY ELM

Slippery Elm is a demulcent, a nutritive tonic and emmenagogue. Slippery Elm is used for ulcers, healing wounds and for treating irritated lungs and throat.

Symbolically, Slippery Elm is used for healing, uniting and for comfort and soothing purposes. It may also be used to aid people who have problems accepting, be that foods, beverages, ideas, concepts and others.
The Divinatory meaning indicated The Wheel of Fortune and the cycles and influences of all aspects of life.  It tells of inner-strength in pure being and of one who has a ‘holistic’ outlook on life.



JUSTICE   -   PLANTAIN

The herb Plantain is an anti-inflammatory, a diuretic and an alterative.

Plantain adjusts head and body metabolism. It is used as a poultice for infections, wounds and injuries.
Plantain can be used as a tea for bladder infections and hepatitis.



The HANGED MAN   -  KELP

Kelp is a demulcent and a dissolvent of tumours. It can stimulate the thyroid, remove goiters and stimulate the metabolism (related to Neptune) and is often used for one who has a lack of compassion.

Symbolically, Kelp is used for hardening towards life, a lack of compassion and harshness and callousness when dealing with others. Kelp symbolizes the returning to the source and tells of initiation, of inner commitment and spiritual breakthroughs.

The Divinatory meaning is ‘finding one’s own’.



DEATH   -   ELDERFLOWERS

Elderflowers are an alterative and diaphoretic. Elderflowers can be made into teas for cold and fever, and to purify the blood and to remove putrification and to clear the skin.

Elderflowers are traditionally planted in cemeteries as a protection against negative spirits and energies.
Symbolically, Elderflowers are used for clearing the past, for letting go of old ways of being, and for protecting oneself from possible karmic reactions of past deeds.



TEMPERANCE     -    ECHINACEA

Echinacea is the herb of purification and stimulates the body’s innate defences, being the immune system. Echinacea tempers heat, and as a tonic, it regulates all the inflammatory process. As an herbal anti-biotic, Echinacea can be used for any infection or inflamed condition and is a wonderful preventative of colds and influenza and builds up the immune system.

Symbolically, Echinacea is used for achieving strength through purity, and tells that beauty emanates from one who is pure of heart.

Echinacea is also used for protecting oneself from heated arguments and angry or aggressive situations.
The Divinatory meaning of Echinacea is to strengthen oneself against harmful outside influences, for fortification and for testing oneself.

The Divinatory meaning for Elderflowers is also ‘re-birth’. It tells of the beginning of the new, and suggests letting go of the past and things no longer needed in one’s life.



THE DEVIL   -    LOBELIA

Lobelia is an anti-spasmodic, a stimulant, an expectorant and a neausiant.  It is used for asthma, lung problems, relieving spasms, nervous tension, cramps and to induce vomiting.

Symbolically, Lobelia is used for breaking old habits and letting go of cares and worries.  It is also for those who need to be more playful.

The Divinatory meaning for Lobelia is for frivolity, playfulness and make-believe.  It is also used to ‘lighten up’.



The TOWER    -    GARLIC

Garlic is a stimulant, an aromatic, a calmative, an anti-biotic, a tonic and an emmenagogue. It is used for digestive and circulatory problems, and also for lung and bronchial problems.

Garlic’s strong odour will cut through most blockages and obstacles, which is why historically it has been known as the ‘Herb of Breakthroughs’. When other antibiotics fail or do not  work, use garlic.

Symbolically, Garlic is used for personal breakthroughs in relationship, and becoming more attentive to others. It also helps one to become more tolerant and more flexible.

The Divinatory meaning is to make one humble. Garlic prepares the way for true realizations and awakening the truth.



The STAR    -     SKULLCAP
Skullcap is a nerve nutrient and alterative.  It releases the nerves and counteracts addictions.

Skullcap calms the mind and heart and prepares the way for meditation.

Symbolically, it tells of the need to look inward and to focus on that which is subtle within oneself in order to find inner peace.

The Divinatory meaning for Skullcap is meditation, distant vision, goals and dreams.



The MOON   -   LEMON BALM

Lemon Balm is a diaphoretic and a cooling agent, and it is used as a tea to induce sweating, to treat colds and reduce fevers. Lemon Balm is calming and relaxing and counteracts moodiness and melancholy.

Symbolically, Lemon Balm is used for one who is brooding and melancholic. It is for one who is longing for the past and has trouble accepting the present.

The Divinatory meaning is indicative of the cool, reserved, instinctual person. It is also for ‘evolution’.



The SUN   -   ANGELICA

Angelica is a stimulant, a carminative, an emmenagogue and a calming tonic. It warms the blood and promotes circulation and also counteracts rheumatic problems and body stiffness.

Symbolically, Angelica is used for a cold, withdrawn person, who has a tendency to stay inside a lot, not exposing themselves to the light of the Sun. Angelica indicates an anti-social person who is withdrawn and morose.

The Divinatory meaning is warmth, openness, friendliness, happiness, earthly joy and contentment.



JUDGEMENT  -   GOLDEN SEAL
Golden Seal is an alterative, a tonic, a conigogue and is used as an anti-biotic to dry up mucous discharge and to purify the blood and lymphatic system.

Symbolically, Golden Seal is used for an extremely over-indulgent person  -  one who eats too many sweets, has cravings for extremes of pleasure and fun at the expense of one’s own being.

The Divinatory meaning for Golden Seal is renewal, changes, awakening to the truth and new possibilities.



The WORLD    -   COMFREY
Comphrey is a demulcent, vulnerary and promotes healing.  It is a tonic and an alterative.

In ancient times, Comphrey was known as ‘knit-bone’ as it was used to heal broken bones and the like. Comphrey was used both externally and internally to unite torn flesh and broken bones. The tea make from the Comphrey leaf is an alterative against fevers and lung infections. The root is taken as a demulcent for ulcers and internal injuries and bleeding, as well as to moisten and strengthen the lungs.

Symbolically, Comphrey is used for healing and for pulling things together within oneself and in one’s outer circumstances.

The Divinatory meaning is to ‘unite’  -  to join together.  Comphrey encompasses the whole and to experience the supreme feeling of union, healing and success.



ACE OF CUPS   -   LOTUS

The peduncle of the Lotus is used as an astringent for bleeding and haemorrhages and also for bloody stools and retention of lochia.

The stamen of he Lotus are used for premature ejaculation, involuntary seminal emissions, nocturnal emissions and frequent urination.

The seeds of Lotus are used for spontaneous ejaculation, vaginal discharge, insomnia, palpitations, chronic diarrhea and for a lack of appetite.

The plume is used for nervousness, thirst and hypertension, and the root is eaten as a food to strengthen the heart and lungs.



TWO OF CUPS   -   UVA URSI

Uva Ursi is a diuretic, an astringent and an anti-biotic.

Uva Ursi is used as a urinary astringent for all genitourinary conditions. Uva Ursi is also taken to help restore normal blood sugar levels in diabetes.

Uva Ursi can be taken after childbirth to prevent infections and helps to restore the womb back to normal size.



THREE OF CUPS   -   TRILLIUM
Trillium is a diuretic, an astringent and an emmenagogue, an antiseptic, an expectorant, a diaphoretic and an ultrative.

Trillium root is used for most feminine disorders associate with the monthly cycle and for excessive or insufficient bleeding. Trillium is also used as an expectorant and diaphoretic for upper respiratory problems, colds and flus.
Trillium is a balancing herb.



FOUR OF CUPS   -   BURDOCK

Burdock is a diuretic, a nutritive and a blood cleanser. The Burdock root is used as a diuretic for skin diseases and urinary disorders. The seeds are often used for skin diseases and fevers.



FIVE OF CUPS    -   HORSETAIL
Horsetail is a diuretic, an astringent and is an alterative that is used for inflammatory urinary tract infections, and also for the inflammation of arthritic and rheumatic disorders.



SIX OF CUPS   -   WATERMELON

Watermelon is a diuretic and refrigerant and the seeds are used to treat fluid retention and all urinary disorders.



SEVEN OF CUPS   -   JUNIPER BERRIES

Juniper Berries are a diuretic, carminative and an aromatic.

Juniper Berries make a warming tonic and diuretic and can be used for most non-inflammatory urinary disorders.

Juniper Berries can also be used for fluid retention, diabetes and as an aid to digestion.

Gravel Root is a tonic and a diuretic which is used to help dissolve urinary stones.  It is used to treat urinary weakness and both excessive and lack of urine.



NINE OF CUPS    -   ZQUAW VINE

Zquaw Vine is known as the ‘female tonic’ and is a diuretic, an alterative, an astringent and a parturient. Zquaw Vine is used to treat most gynaecological complaints and for infertility in women. Marijuana is an anti-spasmodic, a hypnotic, and is known as a narcotic. Marijuana can be made into an alcoholic extract and can be applied topically for the relief of joint aches and pains.

If Marijuana is abused it is disasterous to the adrenal glands and can cause deep-seated emotional disorders, and can promote a lack of motivation and willpower. It can also cause male impotence.

Saw Palmetto is a tonic and nutritive, and promotes the development of all the glands in the body. Saw Palmetto is said to increase muscles and flesh and enlarges the mammary glands of women. It is also used to promote potency and fertility in both and women.

Yellow Dock is an alterative and a blood tonic.  It is a mild laxative which is used to stimulate the secretion of bile through the liver, and also to purify the blood and the whole system in general. Yellow Dock can also be used to raise the Iron levels in the blood (such as to treat symptoms such as anaemia etc.)



THREE OF PENTACLES   -   GENTIAN

Gentian is a bitter tonic and an alterative and can be made into ‘alcoholic bitters’ with similar herbs. Gentian is also used with other herbs as a treatment for herpes and venereal disease. A few drops taken in water before meals stimulates the secretion of hydro-colic acid to aid digestion.



FOUR OF PENTACLES   -   CASCARA BARK

Cascara Bark is a tonic, a laxative and a cholagogue.

Cascara Bark promotes bowel movement and the discharge of bile from the liver. Cascara Bark is generally used as a cleanser for the intestinal tract.



FIVE OF PENTACLES   -   MUGWORT

Mugwort is a bitter, a digestive tonic, a cholagogue, an anti-spasmodic, a parasiticide and an emmenagogue. Mugwort leaves are made into alcoholic bitters, and a teaspoon taken before meals will stimulate the appetite. A Mugwort powder or tea can also be taken when fasting to eliminate intestinal parasites. Mugwort promotes the menses and relieves painful spasm and cramping. The strong bitterness of the herb represents a process of both internal and external purification.

Hops is a digestive tonic, a nervine, a relaxant, a diuretic and a hypnotic. The Hops’ flowers are used to relieve nervousness, to aid digestion, to relieve fevers and to promote urination.



SEVEN OF PENTACLES   -   RHUBARB

Rhubarb is a laxative and an astringent. The Rhubarb root is used to promote bowel movement, to aid digestion and to relieve blood in the stools.



EIGHT OF PENTACLES   -   GINGER

Ginger is a stimulant, a diaphoretic, a carminative and an anti-spasmodic as and an emmenagogue. Ginger is used for poor assimilation of food and for the relief of motion-sickness and spasmodic cramps. Fresh Ginger root is made into a tea to be taken for the relief of colds and fevers.



NINE OF PENTACLES   -  DARK GRAPES

Dark Grapes are a nutritive, a blood tonic and a diuretic. 

The root is a nutritive for the blood as it is very high in iron.  The leaves are used as an astringent and a mild alterative for inflammatory conditions.



TEN OF PENTACLES     -   WILD JAM

Wild Jam is an anti-spasmodic and a diaphoretic. Wild Jam is used for liver and gall bladder problems, thus helping to prevent and assimilate gas.

Marshmallow is a demulcent, a nutritive, an anti-inflammatory and a soothing vulnerary. Marshmallow is used to treat ulcers and sores and soothes irritations such as urinary stones. It then promotes healing. Marshmallow can be applied as a poultice for inflamed wounds and injuries.

Alfalfa is a nutritive, a tonic, a diuretic and an alterative. Alfalfa is useful for regulating weight and as a treatment for arthritis and rheumatism.

Chammomile is a calmative, an anti-spasmodic, a digestant and a mild apparient. Chammomile is used to calm all feelings of stress and nervous tension. Chammomile is excellent for indigestion and colic, for irregular bowels and cramps and is high in easily-assimilated calcium.

Mullein is an expectorant, a demulcent, calmative and anti-inflammatory and an anti-spasmodic. Mullein is used for upper respiratory complaints and relieves mucus and congestion of the lungs. Mullein is a mild calmative and is used topically to relieve pain.

The herb Mistletoe is a nervine and an anti-spasmodic. It regulates the blood pressure, treats cancer and calms the nervous system.

* Contra-indication:  The berries of the Mistletoe are extremely toxic.



SIX OF SWORDS   -   VERVAIN

Vervain is an alterative, a hepatic, a bitter and an anti-spasmodic. Vervain is used for nervousness and irritability caused by a congested liver and gall bladder. Vervain is also used for pre-menstrual tension and alleviates symptoms.



SEVEN OF SWORDS   -   WOOD BETONY

The herb Wood Betony is used as a nervine and an aperient. It is useful for all nervous afflictions and conditions.



EIGHT OF SWORDS   -  BLACK COHOSH

Black Cohosh is an anti-spasmodic, a nervine, an emmenagogue and a tonic.  Black Cohosh is used for all neurological afflictions, and for epilepsy, corea and to alleviate pain. Black Cohosh is used for the liver, hepatitis, childbirth, pre-menstrual cramps and pains. Black Cohosh may also be used to promote the menses.



NINE OF SWORDS   -   VALERIAN

The herb Valerian is a nervine, an anti-spasmodic and a tonic. Valerian is a warming stimulant in some cases, and it is used for nervousness, pain and insomnia.



TEN OF SWORDS   -   EDHEDRA

Ephedra is a diaphoretic, a stimulant and an anti-rheumatic and an emmenagogue. It is used for all upper-respiratory afflictions and also for acute rheumatic problems.

Yarrow is a diaphoretic, an astringent, vulnery and anti-spasmodic. Yarrow is use to promote surface circulation and sweating for colds, influenza and fevers. Yarrow will also relieve internal congestion and thus relieves menstrual cramps.



TWO OF WANDS   -   BASIL

Basil is a calmative, a diaphoretic and an inflammatory. Basil is called the ‘Royal Herb’ for Italian cooking, and can be taken as a tea for stomach upsets, for gas, colds, influenza and fevers.



THREE OF WANDS   -    SAFFRON

Saffron is a stimulant, a diaphoretic, a carminative and an emmenagogue. Saffron is used for all circulatory disorders and promotes pelvic circulation. Saffron is also used as a flavouring in cooking, but should only be used in minute amounts.



FOUR OF WANDS   -   FENNEL SEED

Fennel Seed is an aromatic and a mild stimulant and carminative. Fennel Seed aids digestion, eliminates gas and congestion of the gastrointestinal tract.



FIVE OF WANDS   -    TURMERIC

Turmeric is a stimulant, a mild emmenagogue and a decongestant. It is a carminative for circulatory problems caused by liver disorders and is an excellent tonic for women to regulate the menses.



SIX OF WANDS    -   HAWTHORN

Hawthorn is a heart tonic and an expectorant. It promotes healthy blood circulation and helps with digestion and appetite. Hawthorn can be used for all heart problems, as it brings balance into the blood pressure, and relives pain in the heart.



SEVEN OF WANDS   -   WILD GINGER

Wild Ginger is used as an emmenagogue, a stimulant and an anti-rheumatic. Wild Ginger helps with delayed menses, poor  blood circulation and rheumatic complaints. Wild Ginger is a warming herb.



EIGHT OF WANDS     -    SASSAFRAS

Sassafras is a demulcent, an alterative and a stimulant. It is also a diuretic and aromatic. Sassafras is used for blood purification and skin eruptions. It is also excellent for sores, boils, cancer and urinary problems.



NINE OF WANDS   -  BAYBERRY BARK

Bayberry Bark is a stimulant, an astringent and is used for colds and flu, to promote circulation, whilst at the same time toning and contracting flaccid tissue. The powder of Bayberry Bark is used externally as a dentifrice for receding gums.



TEN OF WANDS   -   PRICKLY ASH BARK

Prickly Ash Bark is a stimulant and an alterative, and is used for circulating problems. Prickly Ash Bark is also used for coldness, arthritis, rheumatic disorders, stiffness and to detoxify the body.

Shepherd’s Purse is an astringent and a haemostatic for bleeding. It is advisable to use only the fresh root of the Shepherd’s Purse plant, either fresh or as a tincture.

Raspberry Leaf is an astringent and an anti-inflammatory. Raspberry Leaf aids pelvic circulation in the female reproductive organs and also aids in childbirth. As an anti-inflammatory, Raspberry Leaf is used for fevers and is good for nausea and motion sickness.



KING OF WANDS   -   CINNAMON

Cinnamon is a stimulant, an astringent, carminative and an aromatic. Cinnamon is used for coldness, poor digestion and for raising the general body metabolism.
